Preprints: Why They Are Important

This guide reviews what a preprint is, how to publish a preprint, and why preprints are important for your research goals.

Why are preprints important?

Publishing preprints bypasses the slow process of publishing articles through traditional publishers. The benefits are:

  • Immediate and free global access for new research.
  • No article processing charges (APC), which can cost thousands of dollars, for open access publishing.
  • Can fulfill funder requirements for open access publishing of research.
  • Peer-review options are available through a global community of experts and not just the few selected by traditional publishers.
  • Instant exposure improves altmetric and impact scores as well as citation statistics.
  • Preprints can be cited just like the version of record (publisher's published copy).
  • Showcase to peers, funding agencies, and employers current research projects and interests.
  • Provides an outlet for research that is not otherwise publishable through traditional publishing.
  • Provides a way to share research-in-progress and attract possible collaboration and support.
