Preprints: Why They Are Important

This guide reviews what a preprint is, how to publish a preprint, and why preprints are important for your research goals.

What is a preprint?

A preprint is the original unedited manuscript that is submitted for publication consideration and peer-review.

  • The authors are responsible for coordinating all editing, formatting, and reviewing.
  • The manuscript is usually in a PDF or word processor file.
  • If submitted to a traditional publisher, the details of the final published version could be different from the preprint
  • There is no DOI, but if published in an institutional repository or preprint server, a DOI may be assigned.
  • There is no citation beyond the title, date published, and acknowledgement of the authors.
