Preprints: Why They Are Important

This guide reviews what a preprint is, how to publish a preprint, and why preprints are important for your research goals.

Is Scholarly Commons a pre-print server?

What are Preprint servers?

Preprint servers are electronic archives or repositories that only contain preprint copies of research and other scholarly papers. Each preprint server has it's own submission process, but there is no formal peer-review (though a basic plagiarism review is not unusual). The Hunt library includes a link to arXiv, a preprint server that archives scholarly articles in the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics. Other preprint server examples include bioRxiv and chemRxiv.

What is Scholarly Commons?

Scholarly Commons is an open access digital repository for the research, scholarship, and creative works of the faculty, students and staff of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. It does archive preprint articles, but it is not exclusively a preprint server.  The submission process for including works can be found on the Scholarly Commons website.
