7 Ways to assess free or low cost course materials

Apt - Does the material fit what you want to teach? Does it discuss the main points, themes, or concepts that will be discussed in the course?
License - Does the resource’s licensing or copyright status allow you to meet your goals? Is it available through the library, qualify as fair use, in the public domain, or have a Creative Commons license?
Provenance - Where is the resource coming from? The library database, a known OER database, a news source, or an unfamiliar website? Does it require payment to access at any point?
Accurate - Is the information correct to your knowledge of the subject? Are there any points that stand out as odd or that may reflect a bias of the author?
Current - Does the resource need to be current or should it be historical? How current should it be to reflect accurate information? Is the topic so new that there may be few resources about it?
Authority - Who created the resource? Was it another professor, a student, a researcher, or anonymous? What is their experience? Was the resource peer reviewed?
Sources - Does the resource cite any other sources? Do other sources cite the intended resource? Are there other sources that concur with or validate the information in the intended resource?
