Runway Incursions

What are runway incursions?

"Any occurrence at an aerodrome involving the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle or person on the protected area of a surface designated for the landing and take-off of aircraft." - ICAO Doc 9870 - AN/463

The following resources can be used to help locate data on runway incursions.

FAA Runway Safety Office - Runway Incursions (RWS)
Contains records of events involving the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle or person on the protected area of a surface designated for the landing and take off of aircraft. Runway incursion events are reported by the respective air traffic control tower. The data reflect the ICAO definition of a runway incursion as well as the related severity categories.
Runway Safety Statistics
National and regional runway incursion totals from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

NTSB Aviation Investigation Search

Contains civil aviation accidents and selected incidents that occurred within the U.S. from 1962 to present.
The full text of most NTSB documents (NTSB's major investigations) is available on the Hunt Library's NTSB Reports webpage.

- Fill in any specifics you are looking for in the search form, for example, Engine Type in the Aircraft section.
- Multiple fields can be filled in.
- Search terms can be typed in the "Enter your word string below" box located in the "Events Details" section.
- Click on Submit Query.
- Click on the various hyperlinks available in the Reports column to view information about accidents of interest to you.
- You can also download your search results by using one of the download options located at the top left of the results list.

Operational Metrics
In 2012, the FAA started an agencywide Metrics Harmonization effort, which was to address terminology, methodology, and stewardship across FAA lines of business for all metrics. Its purpose is to bring order, consistency, and accuracy to metric reporting. The metrics displayed show how FAA is performing in the areas of Safety, Efficiency, Capacity, Environment and Cost Effectiveness.
