Publishing Open Access has many benefits, but the costs can be prohibitive in some journals or conference proceedings. Hunt Library and other departments across ERAU have options to reduce the cost of article processing charges (APCs) or book processing charges (BPCs), or options to make your pre-prints or post-prints available open access at no cost to you.
There are several ways you can reduce, eliminate, or get funding to cover APC costs:
This option requires planning, but if you are committed to publishing open access (or required to by your grant funder), then you may be able to build the cost of APCs into your grant budget.
Hunt Library is committed to reducing OA publishing barriers for our community, and is actively investigating options with publishers to reduce or eliminate APC costs for our researchers. These are usually in the form of transformative agreements, where part of our subscription costs goes towards publication fees. Before paying for APCs, check to see if the library has an arrangement with the publisher that can waive or reduce your APC cost.
Transformative agreements are not possible with all publishers and may change over time. Use the search box below to search for journals that are covered under Hunt Library's transformative agreements (results open in a new tab). This list is updated regularly.
Funds may be available through other ERAU departments or initiatives to help cover your publication costs. Check with your department if they have dedicated funds to support research, or explore options like the Faculty Research Development Program.
If APCs are too expensive, or the journal you are publishing in does not have an open access option, you may have alternatives. Pre-prints and post-prints are versions of an article that precede the final published version. Many journals allow one or both of these version to be made available through institutional repositories or departmental webpages.
At ERAU, our institutional repository is called Scholarly Commons. The Scholarly Communication Department can help determine if archiving your article is possible, and provide hands-on assistance to publish it in Scholarly Commons. Contact commons@erau.edu for more information.
You can also check the archiving policies of publishers and journals using SHERPA / RoMEO.
