No Cost / Low Cost Textbook Course Designation

The No/Low Cost Textbook designation is used to identify courses in Campus Solutions that are using Open Educational Resources or other textbook alternatives.  Classes displaying this designation either do not require students to purchase a textbook, or the total textbook costs are under $25.  This threshold only applies to textbook costs, and there may be other supplies needed for a course.

The goal of this designation is to help students make informed decisions about their textbook costs, and to highlight the thoughtful work done by ERAU faculty to help with textbook affordability.

Requesting the Designation

  • Requests for designations should be submitted by program coordinators or their appointed representative.
    • Faculty who want to have their course designated should contact their program coordinator to have it requested.
  • Courses are designated on the section level, and is tied to specific section numbers.  If the instructor changes, the course designation remains attached to the section number.
  • Requests are taken on a rolling basis, but are most impactful when submitted prior to the start of registration for a specific term.

Designation Criteria

  • The course/section does not require students to buy a textbook or digital code to access course readings, or the total cost of these materials is less than $25.
    • This cost is based on the ERAU bookstore due to some students being required to use the bookstore, but may include lower cost options like ebooks or rentals.
    • This threshold only describes the cost of textbooks and does not reflect other required supplies or materials, such as toolkits.
    • The threshold for the designation has been set particularly low with the understanding that other required materials or fees can be a significant expense.
  • No/Low Cost Textbook courses may include recommended books, library materials, OER/Open Access Textbooks, or other course materials that are free for students to access.
  • Any course section may be eligible, regardless of instruction format.
  • Courses are designated by section. There may be courses where some sections meet these criteria and some do not.
    • Note, the designation is attached to the specific section number and not the instructor name.
  • Linked courses, such as lectures and associated labs, will be designated separately based on their course materials.
  • Currently this designation is only available for courses taught at the Daytona Beach Campus.
